My weekly wrap-ups of the week’s news and reviews (both my own and others) in tweets has been suspended since August 29, owing to my holiday in Barbados (pictured above), so today I’m returning not with a That was the Week That Was but that was the Month That Was, which covers the four weeks since the last one.
There’s a lot of news in here from the West End to Broadway and beyond, pointing towards theatre’s current and welcome resurgence after the long periods of Covid lockdown. But the section that I find most personally alarming is my collection of tweets about theatre and how it is (not) dealing with Covid safety issues. I really, really hope I won’t be saying “I told you so” if (when?) Covid restrictions are re-imposed, but here are the tweets as living evidence.

My column on Theatre’s maskless return: https://shentonstage.com/september-4-theatres-maskless-return/
Even though i'm on holiday, I've just written a column on how the Wild West of the West End and regional theatre's failure of leadership means audiences are not wearing masks & actors aren't required to get vaxxed. This may not end well. https://t.co/TyWntHLzjC pic.twitter.com/iC0uCkNfe8

Happy to report that after I published this yesterday — https://t.co/frLwKX4AJs —and forwarded it to @SOLTnews and @uk_theatre board members, I finally received an acknowledgement from joint CEO @julianpbird. People apparently have differing views. Good to know.

- Revisiting Carousel at Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park:
A wonderful sense of theatrical continuity is provided by the sublime Joanna Riding — an Olivier winner as Julie Jordan in 1992 — now graduating to playing Nettie Fowler, with such aching tenderness that she broke my heart. The loveliest You’ll Never Walk Alone I’ve ever heard. pic.twitter.com/j5k3669nMe

- Ann Hampton Callaway at Pizza Express Dean Street:
One of my proudest-ever achievements was getting @DonmarWarehouse to host a two-week season of @annhcallaway & sister Liz @LizGoesOn to launch the inaugural DIVAS AT THE DONMAR season in 1998: nearly a quarter of a century ago now! pic.twitter.com/kmXJ4si1iV

The final song in @annhcallaway’s show, the title song from @BarbraStreisand’s 1973 film THE WAY WE WERE, written by Marvin Hamlisch and Alan & Marilyn Bergman, is movingly dedicated to those who did not get a proper goodbye. Gorgeous and heartfelt. pic.twitter.com/Emxh4arSDb

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (film):
The freshness, vivacity & most importantly the message of @JamieMusical has been scintillatingly well caught in its transfer to the screen; there are also terrific new musical numbers, & a wonderful newcomer @MaxHarwood in the title role. pic.twitter.com/anLcf7ZCXI
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 19, 2021
Of course it's a pity not to be seeing @JamieMovie in a real cinema; but on @PrimeVideo it will reach a wider audience even quicker. Hopefully some of them will be curious to see the stage version now. Only one more week in the West End, but national tour is now on the road again pic.twitter.com/U5wQOuVMUD
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 19, 2021
- Blithe Spirit (Harold Pinter Theatre):
But whereas BLITHE SPIRIT was previously being squeezed in to a 6 week slot before THE DOCTOR and a planned revival of THE PILLOWMAN at the Duke of York’s, it now returns to complete its run at @HPinterTheatre: a more intimate space better suited to comedy, where it fits snugly. pic.twitter.com/5HJyAsq0lH
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 21, 2021
Jennifer Saunders @ferrifrump’s scene-stealing bravura now feels fully earned, rather than a star turn that belongs in another show. And she’s ideally matched by the lovely, cool restraint of Geoffrey Streatfeild S the husband and @Dillonlisa & Madeleine Mantock as his wives. pic.twitter.com/ikakPUGXss
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 21, 2021
- Frozen (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane):
The performances in @frozenlondon are a knock-out too — @Steph_McKeon & @SamanthaBarks are perfect as the feisty, funny Anna & icy Elsa respectively. And great comic support from @CraigGallivan as Olaf & @ObiomaUgoala as Kristoff. pic.twitter.com/6gkOGPR82M
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 22, 2021
Two downsides to tonight’s theatre visit (entirely unrelated to @frozenlondon!):
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 22, 2021
– Piccadilly Line being out of service around 6.30pm, thus entailing a bus and then cab ride to get to @TheatreRoyalDL (& missing the first 8 minutes)
– having a fall on the Strand after the show!
- The Last 5 Years (Garrick Theatre):
But I need not draw comparisons (it’s only to give context): they are both captivating performers in their own right, also providing piano accompaniment to each other and themselves. I’ve seen them do it four times now — and they rise to fill the larger theatre. pic.twitter.com/l1ey3aDKx3
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 23, 2021
- The Beauty Queen of Leenane (Minerva Theatre, Chichester):
Just caught the utterly spellbinding revival of Martin McDonagh's haunting masterpiece THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE at @ChichesterFT (then @lyrichammer, where it plays next), played with alternating notes of grit and tenderness, by Ingrid Craigie, Orla Fitzgerald & Adam Best. pic.twitter.com/xiuYBtlyo0
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 24, 2021
* Waitress tour (The Hawth, Crawley):
Paying my first-ever visit to @thehawthcrawley for the tour of @WaitressUK: a show I first saw on its try-out at @americanrep in Cambridge, MA in 2015, then B’way in 2016 West End in 2019. Looking forward to finally seeing @luciejones1 as Jenna, @sandramarvinuk , @EvelynHoskins pic.twitter.com/Cfte8YEqdS
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 25, 2021
.@WaitressUK is a small, intimate musical with a big heart; and those qualities are beautifully embodied by a wonderful ensemble, including loving portraits of the power of female friendships from @sandramarvinuk & @EvelynHoskins. pic.twitter.com/r6UXJ9Bnd6

CONTROVERSIES OF THE MONTH
Cameron Mackintosh has responded (at last) to the firestorm ignited by his “gimmick” casting comment. https://t.co/mktj4crUnn
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) August 30, 2021
Both @OfficialALW and @CamMackLtd view the theatre transactionally: it's an engine of profit.
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) August 31, 2021
But they HAVE given back in their stewardship of West End theatres owned by them, like the refurbishment of @TheatreRoyalDL.
Which will now make a ton more money for ALW.
Apologies to @NTPressOffice for incorrectly tagging them in this thread; its not the National Trust, but @NT_PressOffice I should have tagged.

COVID NEWS TWEETS OF THE MONTH:
Lessons from Florida’s current Covid surge: this is a serious lesson for theatres over here, as they have been reopened at full capacity, with few wearing masks, and only limited ventilation in many venues. Full article: https://t.co/XUaZxWKwiI pic.twitter.com/3oMTJoLmFn
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) August 29, 2021
And yet @SOLTnews / @uk_theatre is still not INSISTING on vaccination certificates or even mask wearing at FULL CAPACITY theatres. I think we need to start preparing for lockdowns NOW.
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) August 31, 2021
Unvaccinated Americans urged NOT to travel over imminent holiday weekend; why on earth is Britain not recommending the same thing? Ditto re: attending theatres and other public events. https://t.co/BSdUUPCdLx pic.twitter.com/lXpHPRTQjT

Checking in for my @VirginAtlantic flight tomorrow, you have to sign up to this — if only every West End & regional theatre mandated the same…. @SOLTnews @UK_Theatre pic.twitter.com/IfRVh2GT8G
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 1, 2021
First time on a plane since 2019! @VirginAtlantic announce that mask wearing on the flight is MANDATORY as a condition of carriage (unless medically exempt); WHY can’t the West End @SOLTnews make it likewise a condition of entry, NOT a matter of personal choice? pic.twitter.com/h6IP1lo1Yu
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 2, 2021
This is so disappointing. But I’m afraid I *am* going to lick sides: as much as I revere @MiriamTeakLee’s talent, I’m totally shocked that she’s going to be leading a West End show unvaxxed. It really ought to be a condition of employment that ALL West End performers are vaxxed. https://t.co/keBMl0enJA
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 2, 2021
Wowser. No wonder Covid variants find a happy homecoming in Britain. Pity that @pritipatel is so determined to keep immigrants out of the country while @borisjohnson is happily giving viruses free reign to come as they please. https://t.co/na0cLzHja2
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 3, 2021
And here’s the problem with the West End in a nutshell. The absence of mask wearing enforcement will be the death of it (literally). @SOLTnews have failed dismally. https://t.co/VddNogWZ4f

Here are the protocols required for ATTENDING a Broadway performance by @MTC_NYC.
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 4, 2021
Why isn’t @SOLTnews insisting on something similar in London? It’s a major failure of leadership. @EleanorLloyd @julianpbird pic.twitter.com/sPgDYkeGA9
Vaccines minister @nadhimzahawi says Britain is set to introduce vaccine passports for large public venues. I hope and trust this will include theatres. And obviously needs to include staff — actors, musicians, crew and theatre employees. pic.twitter.com/Hyl3aCaZ92

John Harris in @guardian on how @conservatives seem to have drunk @BorisJohnson’s KoolAid that #Covid is over. (So has @SOLTnews & @uk_theatre, it seems). But others are less convinced. https://t.co/n4P4W7Ayk5 pic.twitter.com/0jpnKfoGsn

EVERY theatre in the UK needs to be able to demonstrate HOW safe they are, like @Hamps_Theatre do here. The air is entirely replaced every 4 mins 45 seconds. (H/t @SamTomoWorld) @SOLTnews @uk_theatre @EleanorLloyd @julianpbird https://t.co/heZDcGyWxN

Wonder how the West End will react to this, if it happens. Half term is usually a premium week — especially for family shows.
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 7, 2021
But then it’s the same West End @SOLTnews who are not enforcing mask wearing, so why should they be surprised?@EleanorLloyd @julianpbird https://t.co/Scu0TPC1RI

The government ignored the advice on keeping OUTDOOR festivals safe — and have allowed INDOOR theatres to open with no social distancing and no masking. What advice have they ignored there? @SOLTnews & @uk_theatre haven’t even made masks a condition of entry! https://t.co/6VlpgZkNyJ

The same should be required of AUDIENCES at @TheRSC and EVERY OTHER THEATRE IN THE LAND. @SOLTnews @uk_theatre @julianpbird @EleanorLloyd @Fiona_Allan https://t.co/iryfbGzXK0
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 8, 2021
Just seen @OffWestEndCom refer to now being “post pandemic”. With 209 deaths reported on Monday and 191 yesterday, I’d say we were still very much IN a pandemic, however much the theatre world would wish it away…..

In the UK, too. @PaulRudnickNY is spot-on about the unvaxxed here. https://t.co/IVRxJsptGI

— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 9, 2021
And @SOLTnews @uk_theatre only “recommend” mask wearing for audiences but don’t require it in their member theatres. https://t.co/tHjOp4hO4r
Interesting: the @SOLTnews promoted @WestEndLive is requiring #CovidPassports — for an OUTDOOR event, but INDOOR West End venues are a free-for-all that’s dependent on each theatre operator. https://t.co/yDFf0upGE7
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 9, 2021
The West End seems to think Covid is over. But it is far from over — and much worse than this time last year. Yet still theatres are not INSISTING on mitigations, like compulsory mask wearing. This is a failure of leadership. @EleanorLloyd @julianpbird @soltnews @uk_theatre https://t.co/WLM6IAFFMs
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 9, 2021
Vaccine mandates in the US are vital to stop the spread of Covid. Thank God @JoeBiden @POTUS is now implementing them. Time for the UK to do the same. @EquityUK should insist on the protection of its members and therefore the theatre industry. https://t.co/P747NgZU0D pic.twitter.com/3rFSIHfYxv
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 10, 2021
#Covid_19 winter wave expected: @BorisJohnson to announce plans this week. These include the hope that people “will take it upon themselves to take extra precautions without the need for formal restrictions.” If what’s happening in theatres is any guide, this will NOT work…. pic.twitter.com/sb5a3hDbNK
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 10, 2021
Important update on the UK’s escalating #Covid crisis. “And yes, it's perfectly possible to be open and keep Delta down in a highly vaccinated population through sensible additional mitigations (such as masks & ventilation….” BUT NOT IF @SOLTnews/ @uk_theatre refuse to ACT. https://t.co/9utIeHbocL
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 10, 2021
Once again the West End fails on #Covid safety. With people consistently refusing to wear masks either — and no mandate in place to compel them to do so — @SOLTnews is failing. @julianpbird @EleanorLloyd https://t.co/jAmsDmtRCU
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 11, 2021
….and no one will wear masks! https://t.co/ylyKxhIHxD
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 11, 2021
Seems the gutless @Conservatives and @sajidjavid are afraid of their own backbencher voting down the idea of Vaccine passports than preserving public health. Same as @soltnews /@uk_theatre, who won’t even enforce mask wearing. https://t.co/iSuK2u92T0 @eleanorlloyd @julianpbird

*Some* theatres are still doing the RIGHT thing on Covid safety. Received this from @Hamps_Theatre ahead of my visit on Saturday. EVERY theatre should be like this. “Mandatory” is the word —not, “it would be nice if you did.” @julianpbird @EleanorLloyd @Fiona_Allan pic.twitter.com/Qd9KGYuS2h
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 16, 2021
It’s one thing audiences not wearing masks — as @SOLTnews only “recommends” them but doesn’t REQUIRE them, they’re under no obligation, but actors, really, should know better. But then @EquityUK don’t, either. @julianpbird @EleanorLloyd @paulwfleming https://t.co/uU1uhJaZU9
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 16, 2021
I hope and trust that if/when @gohbelfast & other Northern Irish venues *do* open, they (a) require vaccination/negative testing PROOF (for both cast and audiences); (b) mandate mask wearing. @julianpbird @Fiona_Allan @EquityUK https://t.co/jYBu79YHMf

It’s shaming (and shameful) that @TheStage of all papers should take this incorrect & incendiary approach to a @nytimestheater piece that only points out what THEY should be doing: holding the UK theatre industry to account for its dereliction of duty on #Covid safety.
— Mark Shenton ? (@ShentonStage) September 23, 2021
Cautionary tale of the spread of Delta in the UK by epidemiologist @DrEricDing: he's talking about mask mandates in schools, but we don't have them ANYWHERE except (officially) public transport, though frequently unobserved there.
